I’m standing next to a wheel that’s about to go through a dynamic balance process. This wheel is mounted on this shaft, and this is a two-plane dynamic balance. When you have the wheel on the shaft and it’s a stand-alone component, and it’s not part of the complete fan assembly yet, we balance at approximately one sixth of the fan’s maximum operating speed.

There are three different classifications that you can request as a buyer. The standard that most fan manufacturers are going to hold to is a G6.3, which is the least stringent of the three different ISO standards. There is a G2.5 and there’s also a G1.0.

If we were balancing this per a G6.3 standard, there is an equation that we use that tells us what the maximum imbalance is on each side of this wheel. And so for example on this wheel size let’s say that number is approximately 15 grams. So we balance it down to where there’s no more than 15 grams of imbalance on either side of the wheel.

Should you ask for a G2.5 balance, the balance requirement then becomes 2.5 divided by 6.3, so the ratio, times 15 grams in our example. So if our example was that 15 grams was acceptable at G6.3, the ratio of 2.5 to 6.3 is our new acceptable grams of imbalance on either side. The same applies for the G1.0. It’s the most stringent of the three different dynamic balance ratings, and so you’d have a ratio of 1 to 6.3 times the 15 grams that we’re using in our example. The G1.0 is the most stringent of the three different balance ratings that you can ask for.
